Abstract

Antimicrobial agents are amongst most
often used drugs which account for 15-30% of total national
drug expenditures. Many surveys have shown a large extent
of inapproriate use of these agents: treatment with antibacterial
with no clear indication, wrong duration of treatment,
wrong route of administration, wrong dose and dosage intervals,
wrong choice of antibacterial, inadequate prophylactic
treatment. Overusage and inappropriate antimicrobial utilization
has resulted in the emergence of resistant microorganisms,
increased costs and unnecessary exposure of patient
to drugs. Many surveys on antimicrobial utilization from both
developed and developing countries have shown inappropriateness
at least to some extent. This stresses the need for
implementation of methods that will preserve the benefits
and reduce the risks of antimicrobial usage.
