Abstract

Istria was unjustly given to Italy based on the London (1915)
and Rapallo (1920) Treaties. Istrian Croats under the Italian
rule were exposed to systematic denationalisation and
constant persecution. They rebelled and fought against
Italian fascist dictatorship in many ways, until joining the
People’s Liberation War, from 1941 to 1945, during which
they demonstrated their will to be reunited with their mother
country Croatia. The Second World War winning countries,
while negotiating the Peace Treaty with Italy in 1947,
recognised the right of the earlier alienated parts of Croatia
to be reunited with their mother country. These then reunited
territories chose their people’s representatives in the Croatian
parliament in Zagreb. Their arrival at the Croatian
parliament was met with great elation. That moment marked
the fulfilment of centuries of Croatian aspirations and the
ultimate reunion of Istria with Croatia.
