The New Media and Members of Lay Ecclesiastical Movements in Croatia
Vine MIHALJEVIĆ
Abstract
A socioreligious empirical research of lay ecclesiastical
movements was conducted in the Institute of Social Sciences Ivo
Pilar within the religious topic Globalisation and Postmodern
Religious Movements. In this article the results of the general
faith in the media of social communication have been given as
well as the frequency of their use (personal computer, e-mail,
internet and data base), the way members of lay ecclesiastical
movements in Croatia are using them with regard to their
individual and socioprofessional features (gender, age, level of
education and place of birth). For measuring the given relations
some indicators have been used from descriptive statistics, such
as frequencies and percentages, while for drawing the
conclusion on the existence of a statistically significant difference
in the examinees' answers, the author used the χ2 - test. The
results obtained show that examinees express a very high
degree of distrust generally towards all the media and a
relatively low degree of frequency of use of the new media –
the personal computer, internet, on-line data base and e-mail.
Significant factors influencing the frequency of use of these new
media are the examinees' gender and age. The level of
education of the examinees is a relevant factor in determining
the intensity of use of the personal computer and e-mail, and
irrelevant in determining the use of the internet and data base.
The place of birth also significantly influences the frequency of
use of the internet, e-mail and data base, while it is insignificant
in determining the intensity of the use of the computer. The
findings show that it is necessary to sensitise members of new
ecclesiastical lay movements to the new media and to their
application within the horizon of human meaning, because at
the very foundation of the new media and new technology are
human beings and their entire social and historical as well as
cultural and religious individual and common development in
the atmosphere of democratic society and community.A socioreligious empirical research of lay ecclesiastical
