Abstract

Rehabilitation after stroke should start
immediately after neurologic deficit stabilization. In early
phase of the disease decubitus and contractures, thrombosis,
urinary tract infection and pneumonia should be prevented,
which can be done by changing position in bed. At the
same time passive and active range of motion exercises
should be started to prevent contractures and development of
spasticity. Besides kinesiotherapy heat or cold and functional
electrical stimulation (FES) should be introduced. The patient
should be verticalized step by step. After referral to a rehabilitation
institution, motor relearning process becomes more
intense and gait training begins also. Physiotherapists are
using various treatment approaches to facilitate movements.
The aim is to gain optimal function and to diminish spasticity,
thalamic pain, shoulder - hand syndrome. After dismissal the
family support is necessary in activities of daily living to prevent
the patient to feel neglected and useless. By further
rehabilitation program at home achieved motor functions
could be preserved and new functions can be gained.
