Abstract

The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians was proclaimed on December 1, 1918. Shortly after that, the first open reaction against the unification with Serbia occured in Croatia. On December 5, 1918 soldiers, mostly Croats, of the former Austro Hungarian army units clashed with supporters of the Yugoslav state. The fighting erupted at the Jelačić square in Zagreb. Statements and interpretations about the clash are often conflicting and many facts about it are unknown. During the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945), the ruling ustasha regime presented the events that occured on December 5, 1918 as a "first sign of the Croatian revolutionary consciousness". Historiography, press and propaganda of the Independent State of Croatia presented these events as a "beginning of the ustasha struggle and symbol of the revolutionary ustasha history''.
