Abstract

The paper discusses the needs for radical changes of the
traditional system of scientific and academic research in
Croatia into a new knowledge production as a consequence
of the emerging of the knowledge-based economy and
national innovation systems in the1990s. The new mode of
knowledge production aims at capitalization and commercialization
of knowledge and research through science-
-industry cooperation. The paper explains the concept and
main characteristics of new knowledge production and
discusses the possibilities of transformation of the present
Croatian scientific system into this new mode of research. It
concludes that this transformation in Croatia is possible only
by shifting the traditional scientific policy into innovation
policy and building up a comprehensive Croatian national
innovation system.
