Abstract

Airway management is one of the most important skills in the fi eld of anesthetic care. Although endotracheal intubation is considered the gold standard for airway management, extraglottic airway devices are increasingly used not only in patients scheduled for elective surgery, but also in out-of-hospital settings as rescue devices in diffi cult airway management. Extraglottic airway devices are generally safe and provide adequate oxygenation and ventilation. Despite this, the use of devices may be associated with various complications. The incidence of complications and adverse events is quite low, usually minor and typically self-limiting; however, although rare, life-threatening complications may occur. To reduce the possibility of compromising patient safety, appropriate selection of patient and size of device is of utmost importance, along with good knowledge and experience in insertion technique. In this article, we will provide a brief overview of the complications associated with the use of extraglottic airway devices.
