Abstract

Adolf Wissert (1883-1957) belonged to a new generation of high school teachers who were influential during the inter-war period. He was educated during the Austro- Hungarian period, completing his doctorate in history and geography at the University of Graz. He gained a reputation due to his work at the Gymnasium in Varaždin. He wrote textbooks, encouraged interdisciplinary approaches, and toppled traditional stereotypes. To contribute to popular enlightenment, he gave lectures throughout the countryside. Along with his pedagogical work, he wrote about the rich local history, for example, »A word about Varaždin's manors« and »Historical Monuments in Varaždin«. "Wissert also played an important role in promoting cultural life and in organizating the youth. His pedagogical achievements were considerable as well.
