Abstract

Alongside already established medical indications, azithromycin can be used in a plethora of uncommon diseases with two salient mechanisms of action: classical antibacterial activity and immunomodulatory action. Extensive database search and literature analysis, with an emphasis on clinical trials where azithromycin was used beyond the classical indications, reveal the efficacy of this drug – not only in the treatment of the entire spectrum of bacterial diseases, but also for certain parasitoses and conditions without proven infectious etiology. Taking into account such indications increases the possibility of successfully managing patients when other treatment modalities fail to show a satisfactory effect.
