Abstract

Growing number of people in Croatia are
using varieties of alternative and complementary forms of natural
therapies including herbal medicines. Evidence-based medicine
should be the background of making decision how to treat
mental as well as somatic disorders. This article provides a
review of current information on natural (herbal) medicines pertinent
to physicians who treat patients with mental disorders.
Knowledge of the properties of natural agents can improve efficacy,
effectiveness and efficiency of primary care treatment.
Clinical effects, mechanisms of action, interactions, and adverse
reactions of natural medicines are reviewed. The findings
reviewed here were retrieved via a MEDLINE literature search of
scientific journals.
