Abstract

Information has been collected for the role and usage of
television in families, with a specially constructed compilation
questionnaire on a sample of 313 parents of pre-school
children from four urban and rural settlements, and with a
special emphasis on their children's access to television. A
general hypothesis has been tested, using a discriminative
analysis, which was expected to show that the families,
depending on whether they live in an urban or a rural area,
that is bigger or smaller settlement, will differ signifficantly in
the view of the culture of watching, television habits, as well
as parents' methods and attitudes regarding their child's
interaction with the TV-set. Results, which were quite difficult
to interpret, due to a lack of Croatian research, have shown
that television has got a significant role in the lives of
Croatia's families and its children, but not to such an extent,
as is the case in the majority of more developed countries.
They have also confirmed the set hypothesis, though they
have shown as well that the families from a city in the centre
of a county, are very similar to the rural families, in view of
the observed matter. This, however, was more expected from
families living in smaller cities, which on the other hand,
resemble the families from big cities.
