Abstract

For years, stroke has been one of the leading causes of death and disability both in Croatia and worldwide. By educating the general population and healthcare personnel, we can ensure early detection of stroke symptoms, as well as the use of appropriate procedures and pre-hospital and hospital treatment. Stroke units are organized within the hospitals’ neurology wards, employing multidisciplinary teams. The purpose of such stroke units is to shorten the time needed for a patient to be examined by a specialist and undergo neuroradiological workup, and to increase the use of thrombolytic treatment. Treatment in stroke units reduces mortality and the need to institutionalize patients, and improves long-term quality of life. In order to ensure adequate management of all patients with acute ischemic stroke, it is necessary to define a patient management protocol containing descriptions of diagnostic procedures, treatment options, patient monitoring and prevention or treatment of complications.
