Abstract

The Eurasian Thick-knee is endangered species at the national level, with the most of breeding population situated on the islands of northern Adriatic Sea, and two confirmed breeding sites near Pula (Istria) and Vrlika (Central Dalmatia). On 11 May 2018, one breeding
pair was confirmed near the village of Pokrovnik. Two adult birds were observed on dry grassland, guarding and incubating 2 eggs in a shallow scrape on the ground. Besides the location in Central Dalmatia (Vrlika), there are presently no further available data about any confirmed breeding in continental Dalmatia. Therefore, this newly discovered site is the southernmost breeding location in Croatia. Since this species is difficult to observe due to its cryptic plumage and nocturnal activity, each record is very important. Further research on this species would contribute to better estimates of the total breeding
population in Croatia, and to the establishing of additional conservation measures.
