Abstract

Geraniums (Pelargonium zonale and P. peltatum) are among the most popular balcony plants. There exist a large number of cultivars in different flower colors, and are excellent for sunny positions. The aim of this paper is to present the taxonomy of the species, its origin, cultivation as well care and maintenance practice. Genus Pelargonium belongs to the Geraniaceae family and originates from South Africa. Geraniums are mainly grown vegetatively from cuttings, though they can also be propagated by seeds. They require a sunny place, a slightly acide substrate, regular fertilization and moderate watering. They are most commonly used for window boxes and on balconies and are one of the best-selling species for outdoor use.
