Abstract

In the research work are discussed various
aspects of persistence of chlamydial infection, including its
morphological characteristic, diagnostics, pathogenesis and
therapy. Clinical significance of persistence has been proved.
Substantial bibliographic material on the chlamydial persistence
is presented, as well as the data from our own investigations,
including electron microscopic ones, obtained from
the study of 468 patients. Indirect indices of the existence of
persistent chlamydial infection are: duration over two months
or undefined duration, previous episodes of urogenital
chlamydial infection and inefficacy of previously applied
antimicrobic therapy, use of antibiotics ineffective to chlamydia,
absence of chlamydial infection in sexual partner and
immune system insufficiency. For the treatment of persistent
types of chlamydial infections, the total dose of 3.0 g
azithromycin is recommended, applied as single therapy
1x1.0 g on the first, seventh and fourteenth day from the
treatment onset.
