Abstract

The acute phase response of inflammatory reaction is manifested by increased synthesis of specific proteins known as acute phase proteins. Acute phase proteins include the C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, alpha-1-glycoprotein, fibrinogen, α 1 acid glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin and others. These proteins are mostly synthesised by the hepatocytes. This review article outlines the concentration values of these acute phase proteins monitored in pathological conditions in dogs and humans. Recent studies indicated the significance of these proteins for diagnosis and monitoring the course and outcome of different diseases.
