Abstract

Expanded use of antimicrobial substances in human and veterinary medicine and their presence in effluents and the environment is a cause of major concern. The most commonly used antimicrobials are macrolides, tetracyclines, quinolones, sulfonamides and trimethoprim. Numerous studies have demonstrated their adverse effects on aquatic organisms and plant life, and the biggest issue concerning the presence of antimicrobial substances and their residues in the environment is the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, it is important to provide high-quality, reliable and sensitive analytical methods that can provide unambiguous results and give insight into the distribution of antimicrobial substances in water. Multi-residual analysis of antimicrobials involves the preparation, extraction, purification and chromatographic analysis of the analyte in the sample. This report examines the application of high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS) due to its specificity, speed, sensitivity and reliability. Regarding the nature of the matrix (such as wastewater ), purification is performed by SPE, SPME or SPME capillary technique, followed by LC-MS/MS analysis. Molecules of the analyte in sample aliquots are subjected to electrospray ionization (ESI), and the triple quadrupole analyser provides determination of very low concentrations of the analyte and the structure of the desired target molecule.
