Abstract

Running is one of the natural movements of the human body enabling a person to relocate in space, usually in one direction. From the evolutionary point of view, it is believed that the possibility of long distance running has contributed to the evolutionary progress of humans – the genus Homo in particular. Over time, running has transformed from a method of movement and transport to a competitive sports activity or a recreational activity aimed at preventing diseases and preserving health. Besides numerous positive effects it has on human health, running also causes certain problems specific to the activity itself. Treatment of runners demands understanding of the specificities of running as an activity. Advising an inactive person to start recreational running also requires certain knowledge.
