Abstract

This paper deals with the issue of sea in the tales of the most famous Croatian children's story writer Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. The author's complete opus can be divided into three periods. In each of these periods the motif of sea is the foundation of Brlić's recognizable principles on which she insisted throughout her whole creative period.
In the first creative period, the sea reflects the author's pedagogic principles that, at the same time, correspond to the poetics of the Croatian children's literature of that time. In second and third period the mythological sea is used to realize the author's ethical standpoints. We can conclude that the sea motif clearly reflects the development path of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, starting from her first work Valjani i nevaljani, written in the spirit of didactic literature, to completely authentic literary creativity in Priče iz davnine.
