Abstract

Reproductive traits are not highly heritable and therefore require a greater intensity of selection in order to achieve genetic improvement. In beef production, the intensity of selection for female reproductive traits is usually low and the selection of breeding cows in commercial herds is usually based on age or weight, not on reproductive performance. Structurally sound bulls, with a large scrotal circumference and high semen
quality should be selected as herd sires. Moreover, it is important to remember that the quality of the semen of each bull changes over time, and that libido and mating ability should be evaluated periodically.
