Abstract

Tumors of the mammary gland are among the most common neoplasms in bitches and cats, but in cats malignant histological types are more prevalent. These tumors usually develop in older animals and steroid sex hormones play a major role in their development. In prognosis, an important factor is the size of the primary tumor, indicating the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment of mammary tumors. The method of choice in the treatment of these tumors is radical surgical excision of the tumor and the remaining mammary glands, while the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy in cats is still not entirely clear. In this study current knowledge is summarized about the causes and presentation of the disease in cats, the biological behavior of the mammary tumors, diagnosis and prognostic factors, and a brief overview is given related to tumors of the mammary gland in cats in the Republic of Croatia.
