Abstract

This article aims to examine Huysmans' religious conversion in what literary critics usually call Roman de Durtal. Firstly, the author of the paper observes the originality of this almost forgotten fin-secular writer as well as the Decadence influence on his writing. Secondly, by referring to Huysmansian specialists, he tries to show why the literary and spiritual orientation of this multi-faceted writer changes course and how the return to the Catholic faith is manifested in The Durtal Cycle (Le cycle de Durtal), a tetralogy featuring the same main character - Durtal – and through whom the author of Down There (Là-Bas) tells us the stages of his own path to Damascus.

Keywords
