Abstract

Glasshouse whitefly is permanently serious pest of cucurbits, especially cucumbers, in the coastal and continental part of Croatia. It is particularly damaging in greenhouse/glasshouse cultivation where its high reproduction potential can be realised related to favourable environmental conditions. In recent period, sporadic strong infestations of fruiting vegetables by T. vaporariorum, cucurbits (cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin, melon and watermelon) and solanaceous crops (tomato and eggplant), have been recorded in field conditions within Croatia. Since T. vaporariorum has been proven to have a high degree of resistance to insecticides, which makes its control very difficult, it is necessary to repeat the knowledge on its characteristics as well as on management strategy against this pest. The problem is focused on cucurbits, especially cucumber which is among the most common species of vegetables grown in covered facilities in Croatia.
