Abstract

After describing symbolical images of birds on classical and medieval coins in the first two parts of the article (see: Numizmatičke vijesti, nos. 70/2017 and 71/2018), in the third part the author begins a description of symbolical representations of other animals on coins. In the introduction he describes and explains the importance of zoolatry and the basic symbolical classification of animals. He writes about the origin of animal symbolism and its connection with totemism. In the first chapter he explains the symbolism and kinds of tetramorphs. The second, longest, chapter shows the horse on coins, as one of the oldest and most widespread zoomorphic symbols. The article ends with a description of Pegasus.
