Abstract

The Statute of Dubrovnik (1272) and the renewed Customs Statute (1277) regulated modes of measuring and inspection of measures. Owing to commercial treaties with numerous towns and states from the 10th till the 19th century, it’s very active civil engineering as well as the production of different goods and ships, before all Dubrovnik had a highly developed measurement policy.
The basic gauge for length — the ell, was the length of the right hand elbow of the statue Orlando placed before Sponza palace (1418). As gauges for liquids and grain stone holders were used in Dubrovnik. In trade, handicraft, marine and science different devices and instruments were used, similar to those in highly developed countries.
