Abstract
The paper applies a relatively new day-to-day method (DTD) that analyses day-to-day variations in the minimum, mean and maximum of daily air temperatures measured at the Zagreb-Grič observatory in the period from 1878 to 2018. The DTD values for a period of a whole year, from 1 January to 31 December, and for the warm period of the year from 15 June to 15 September were calculated and compared. The analysis’ objective was an attempt to establish, by applying this relatively new and subtle method, how the impact of climate change and urbanization reflects on the variations in characteristic (minimum, mean and maximum) daily temperatures during the whole year and during the warm period. It was determined that there was no appearance of trends (either positive or negative) in the series of mean day-to-day, DTDmean, or minimum day-to-day, DTDTmin, variations in day-to-day temperatures both in the cases of yearly and warm period DTDs. In the case of series of maximum day-to-day temperatures, DTDTmax, and the differences between the maximum and minimum day-to-day temperatures, ΔDTD, there was a statistically significant difference in the behaviour of the series in the sub-period prior until and including 1958 as well as in a recent period from 1959 to 2018. The differences were also observed in the case of yearly series and the series from the warm period DTDs. Statistically much less significant lower inter-day variations were observed in the past 60 years. The variations in the warm period, DTDTmin, were significantly lower that the yearly ones. On the other hand, the variations in yearly differences, ΔDTD, were significantly smaller than the ones in the warm period.
