Abstract

The surnames of type Dragović are very complex in their structure, although they are trisyllabic with a very clear boundary between the stem and the suffi x. Their hidden complexity is the consequence of diverse stems from which the surnames are formed. They are made from personal names as Vladović from Vlado, or from nicknames as Ćorović from Ćoro (with the meaning of a person who cannot see on both or one eye). They can differ by the way they are formed, but those differences are neutralized when they are derived by the suffi x -ović (-ević) in the same way as the differences of the stems Vid, Vido and Vidoje in the surname Vidović. Because of the complex relation between the stem and the suffi x in the segmental part of the surname type Dragović, even the suprasegmental part of the structure is complex. Large number of examples the author describes reasons the why in those surnames the fi rst and the second syllabes can be stressed (Šîmović and Šimòvić) and why the fi rst syllable can be short as well as long (Šîlović and Š``ilović) with the falling and rising accent (Žûljević and Žúljević).
