Abstract
Cystic echinococcosis caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm is one of the most important parasitic diseases of farm animals worldwide, but also one of the most widespread parasitic zoonoses. The location of the cyst may vary depending on the type of intermediate host. In ruminants, hydatid cysts are more often found in the lungs, while in pigs, but also in humans, they are predominantly in the liver, although they may also be found in other organs. Depending on their location and size, the cysts can cause various symptoms, and in the case of rupture, allergic reactions and even the death of the intermediate host have been reported. This paper describes findings of hydatid cysts in the livers of wild boars in two hunting grounds in eastern Croatia: the state open hunting ground No.: XIV/9 - ‘’PODUNAVLJE-PODRAVLJE’’ and the game breeding area No.: XIV/8 - ‘’NABRĐE’’. During the evisceration, a detailed examination of the abdominal and thoracic organs was performed. Out of the 64 wild boar examined, hydatid cysts were found in the livers of 36 animals (P=56.25%). In some livers between two to nine cysts were determined, which were, in most cases well-separated from each other, while in one case they were joined into a cluster. Microscopic examination revealed protoscolexes in all cysts. Genetically, strains G1 and G7 are found in wild boars, which are also the most common causes of cystic echinococcosis in humans. Considering that cystic echinococcosis is still a public health problem in Croatia, regular deworming of dogs is needed to reduce the risk to the health of domestic and wild animals, as well as humans.
