Abstract

The warm sulphurous springs of Istarske Toplice issue on the foot of a fault scarp from Upper Cretaceous limestone. They are remarkably radioactive, particularly the spring uncovered in 1955 on a meadow west of the main spring. Its high radioactivity (218 m μ c/1) makes it the third strongest radioactive spring in Europe on record and is due to the secondary enrichment of uranium in the black mud deposited from the sulphurous water through which its water flows.
