Abstract

There is a relatively small number of relevant news portal in Croatia – three
classic ones (general – Iskon, T-Portal and Index) and one portal of a daily (Večernji
list – which functions on different principles). Iskon has the most visitors,
daily approximately 140 thousand. Monthly, Iskon has around 950 thousand visitors,
which means that almost everybody on the Internet visit the portal once a
month. The research dated from the year 2003 showed that the two thirds of our
visitors are under 35 years old.
If we want their click, Internet portal must profile its contents to fulfill their
interests. The nature of Internet portals is very different from radio stations or
weeklies, which have approximately the same number of employees. Portals are
very similar to news agencies, by the rhythm of publishing, actuality and speed.
The difference in the quality of portals is in the adjustment of agency news for
wide auditorium. As a classic agency, Hina writes texts for journalists, who use it
as a source for their story or a research. The agency does not address the final consumer
of the news, and therefore, the editing, adjusting and presenting the news on
the Internet portal is what makes all the difference between the portals.
