Abstract

The development and the present concept of the global positioning system (GPS) are presented clearly. There is also a short description of the basic operation principle and of the main GPS characteristics given, as well as its present accuracy. The paper gives a clear overview of the development of GPS modernization program in the years to come. It also presents the modernization of signal GPS components where it should be pointed out that two new signals are being introduced that will be available for civil users. The modernization is presented as it has also been planned following individual phases, up to the year 2030. Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS): Russian GLONASS and the European Galileo have also been discussed. Near future of GPS can be observed in the integration with Galileo, and further in the integration with other sensors as well that are used for collecting all kinds of data serving in the creation of information necessary for any aspect of human life. At the end there is also an assessment given, as well as the expectations that the number of users of GSP will rise in the future in various fields of human life, which says more than enough about how important and how broadly GPS is applied.
