Abstract

Objective. To determine the frequency of cytologic smear sampling and the prevalence of abnormal cervical cytologic findings according to women's age group. Methods. Cervical cytologic findings at the Cytology Department of the Virovitica County Hospital have been analyzed retrospectively in the period between years 2003–2005. Prevalence and dynamics of several types of abnormal findings according to the women age groups as well as its pathohistological correlation has been analyzed. Results. 15952 cytologic smears were taken, screening was performed among one fourth of population, 749 (4,7%) abnormal cytologic findings were established among 484 (2,25%) women, with the highest prevalence in the age group 20–29 (5,83%). There is the greatest prevalence of CIN I findings (69,11%), with a decrease of CIN I and an increase of CIN II in the observed period; the highest prevalence of CIN I (4,5%) and CIN II (2,2%) was in the group of women aged 20–29 (p=0,007). Progression into a higher type of abnormal cytologic finding was found in 26 (10,15%) women, in 47 (18,36%) the findings were unchanged, the regression into a lower type in 24 (9,38%) or into a normal finding in 159 (62,11%) women was established. Histologic evaluation of cytologic findings demonstrated ¬coincidence in 40 (64,52%), higher pattern in 8 (12,9%) and lower in 14 (22,59%) findings. Conclusion. Screening for cervical cancer was performed on an insufficient number of women, there is an increase of abnormal cervical cytologic findings as well as its progression. Screening should include a greater number of women under 30, pregnant women, and older menopausal women from rural areas who do not practize the gynecologic examination.
