Abstract

In order to analyze the attendance at the matches of football championship in Croatia two basic research methods were used. At the beginning, we have conducted the quantitative analysis of the number of attendances at the first football league matches during the season 1992/93. We have analyzed the changes in the number of attendances at the matches of “Hajduk” Split within a period of the last I5 years. After that, 505 spectators of the match “Hajduk”. “Rijeka” were polled in order to get an insight into the opinions of football spectators.
The conclusion of this research is that there is a decrease in the number of attendances at the matches of the first football league in Croatia. There are two main causes of this occurrence. The first one can be defined as external, and it is based on war conditions which prevent many people from being present at the matches. The second and the main cause, defined as the internal one, is connected to the quality of football games. On the basis of the survey results we can draw the conclusion that, first, the internal cause is connected to the low quality of the play and the players in the first league, the competition between the teams is not exciting enough and consequently, the teams from Croatia have not succeeded in taking part in European football competitions.
