Abstract
A selected sample of 76 male students at the Faculty for Physical Culture in Zagreb, aged 18-24 was tested on some variables assumed to represent hypothetical dimensions of flexibility and explosive force. These variables were treated as predicatory while the swimming speed at 25, 50 and 300 m crawl style was the criterion variable. The tests of flexibility and explosive force did not explain the swimming speed crawl style at 25 m. It was possible to predict the swimming speed at 50 and 300 m by means of selected variables at the significance level of .05.
The relation between swimming speed and selected tests depend on the movement structure (the participating musculature) as well as the mechanism for tonus regulation and successive inclusion of individual antagonistic-agnostic groups of muscles. The explosive force measured by means of a broad jump (in place) test was a positive contribution to the swimming speed at 50 and a negative one at 300 m. Flexibility was also a significant contribution at both 50 and 300 m.
