Abstract

Stereological and morphometric methods were used to quantify changes to the mycopaillaries of five male mongrel dogs subjected to fifty-six days of hypokinesis. Inactivity was enforced by keeping the animals in a confined space.
Examination of muscle tissue before and after the period of inactivity revealed a significant decrease in the density of the capillary network (a decrease of 31,9% and 14% using the equations of Underwood and Weibel, respectively). This was attributed to the effect of prolonged inactivity. The number of capillaries, per unit area was also significantly decreased both for transverse (by 30.7%) and longitudinal (by 34.3%) cross-sections. At the same time there was an increase of 8% in intercapillary distance.
The period of hypokinesis did not give rise to any significant changes in the degree of orientation of capillaries in muscle tissue.
