Abstract

Structural and ultrastructural changes in mitochondria of type I and type II muscle fibres were investigated in five male mongrel dogs subjected to fifty-six days of hypokinesis followed by a singe session of running to exhaustion o a treadmill. Samples of muscle tissue were taken before and after the period of inactivity and after the running session and they were examined by light and electron microscopy.
In sample taken after the running session significant changes were observed in mitochondria, particularly those of type I muscle fiber. Giant, i. e. swollen, mitochondria characterized by a translucent matrix were present. Furthermore, bursting of outer mitochondrial membranes, stretching and deformation of cristae and even total destruction of mitochondria was noticed in a number of cases.
It is concluded that prolonged running after an eight week period of hypokinesis gives a rises to a number of destructive changes in mitochondria. These changes are especially visible in type I muscle fibres.
