Abstract

A classical sociometric measurement of two generations in one basketball club has been conducted. We have asked the examinees to name an unlimited number of team-mates according to the emotional and functional types of selection criteria. We have applied the method that is analogous to the metric multidimensional scaling with an oblique transformation of dimensions. In the first generation we have obtained two, and in the second five taxonomy dimensions that differentiate the players in regard to the analyzed selection criteria. The results show the value of the sociometric technique in possibility of revealing and predicting the “natural leaders" in a sports team, and they also confirm a well known fact that the change of the individual status within a group is connected to the change of the group members.
