Abstract

This contribution is about the philosophical-theological and
artistic evaluation of the icon as a work of art and place of the Christian
cult initiation. The author of this contribution displays the artistic and
architectural specifics and values as well as the theological (liturgical)
significance of the icon in the example of the iconographic elements of
the apse of St Euphrasius’ basilica in Poreč.
Since the topic demands an interdisciplinary approach in terms
of methodology, the author has divided the content of this study into
three parts: the focus of the first part is the issue of the icon as a
work of art in the perspective of the phenomenologically imposed
thought with Gadamer; the content of the second part concentrates
on the analysis and evaluation of liturgical i. e. sacral space in which
the icon is placed: the correlation between the icon and intra-church
space of St Euphrasius’ basilica; the third and the most important
part of the study presents the theological-artistic analysis of the main
mosaic-icons of the apse of St Euphrasius’ basilica.
