Abstract

In the process of planning and programming physical education classes it is highly relevant to perceive and respect the students’ attitudes towards the subject and its programme opportunities in order to increase the teaching efficacy and efficiency. The main goal of this research was to find out what students perceptions and opinions were. For that purpose two questionnaires were designed and 613 freshmen and sophomores (the 1st and the 2nd year students) from the - Faculty of Economics in Osijek, academic year 1995/1996, took part in the investigation and answered the research questions.
The questionnaire number 1 (QI) offered opportunities for students to select the physical education programme they preferred most. Simultaneously, the obtained data were used for the formation of teaching groups. The purpose of the second questionnaire (Q2) was the recognition and determination of students attitudes towards all the kinds of benefits they might have from participating in physical education classes during their study. Further, it was important to find out whether the number of practical sessions per week and the teaching delivery were satisfactory. Suggestions and propositions were expected from the students. The frequency distribution and the percentages were calculated from the obtained data.
The results of the QI show that the majority of students chose the physical fitness programmes. The analysis of Q2 shows positive attitudes towards physical education. Students also think it is very useful to participate in physical activities during their study. Two to three practical sessions per week, but outside of the regular classes time-table, would be satisfactory. Students are not completely satisfied with the way teaching was being conducted, so they suggested an improvement of the material work conditions, emphasizing the necessity of decreasing the number of students in groups and increasing the number of available programmes (female students seek more aerobic programmes combined with physical fitness programmes).
