Abstract

The analysis and design of piers used on seismically resistant bridges, with the cross sectional reinforcement in form of interlocking spirals, is presented. The study is based on recommendations given by the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS), on European standards 1992-1-1 and 1998-2, and also on results obtained in various studies. This method of reinforcement results in lesser consumption of cross-sectional reinforcement and in faster assembly, particularly when compared to traditional cross-sectional reinforcement with cross ties and overlapping ties.
