Abstract

In this work the author investigates the idea of reception, its
emergence in theology in the context of II Vatican Council, and also
the development of theology of reception in the post-council time. The
Council is understood as a happening, as new Whitsuntide. It can be
completely explained only in the light of the intentions and aims set
by Pope John XXIII. Reception of the Second Vatican Council, which
draws on the communion vision of the Church, stands for a multilayered,
slow process of adoption of the Council’s teaching and its
realisation in practice in all the spheres of church life. Realisation of
that reception, which depends not only on the internal dynamics of
growth but also on the external reasons, eludes the exact analysis.
From the beginning, reception has been developing “in different
forms and in different ways” (UR 14), which is evident in the life
of local Church, depending on the internal dynamics of faith, life
circumstances and social environment in which it exists. Therefore,
we should talk about different levels of actualisation of the Council,
not only with regard to particular local Churches but also with
regard to the adoption of particular contents. Complete reception
is not only the reception of the letter but also of the spirit of the
Council, i.e. when the teaching of the Council permeates and restores
all the spheres of church life.
