Abstract

During 2020, symptoms of Canary Island date palm decline not similar to those caused by red palm weevil or palm borer were noticed in Zadar, in Vir and in Sutivan, the Island of Brač. Older, lower leaves of the canopy were dying, the canopy was poor, while younger leaves were smaller and chlorotic. Leaflets on only one side of the rachis were dried, and dark streaks were visible along petioles. Fusarium oxysporum was isolated from symptomatic leaves. Isolates were identified on the basis of EF-1α region sequencing, symptomatology and host as F. oxysporum f. sp. canariensis, the causal agent of Fusarium wilt of Canary Island date palm. Disease biology, impact and management are briefly described in the article. Fusarium wilt of Canary Island date palm is recorded for the first time in Croatia, representing a new threat for this valuable ornamental plant species along the Eastern Adriatic coast.
