Abstract
The scientific and social aspects of the precautionary principle have been discussed as have the significance of that principle to sustainable development and the need to apply it to concrete controversial scientific situations. The ecological dimension of care is particularly stressed which is permeated with an inter-disciplinary, holistic approach to reality and the care for the created. Greed is portrayed as an internal structural anomaly of science and as an external consequence of immoderate development. Correction of that greed by applying the precautionary principle requires the interaction of science, the public and the Church.
