Abstract
The article explains the notion of the culture of the alternative. The culture of the alternative emerged out of Christian faith which from its beginning was understood as an alternative, primarily as an alternative religion and philosophy. Today's culture of the alternative contradicts instrumental rationality and can be interpreted tri-fold: rationality of values, nihilism and divinity. All three forms represent a challenge to science and the pastorale. With regard to science, that challenge in particular relates to the danger of scientifical understanding of science that raises science to the level of religion, that is, its instrumental rationality is proclaimed as the only valid interpretation of man's existence. The culture of the alternative portrays man as a multi-dimensional being, a being with several prospects. With regard to the pastorale, various forms of the culture of the alternative act correctively on the pastorale in as much as they warn of the various off-shoots or reduction in current day pastorale: pastoral projects of projecting pastorale, civil pastorale without eschatology and functional pastorale without any trace of authenticity for an authentic encounter with the truth, with God.
