Abstract

The main challenge for agriculture in the coming years is to increase food production to meet the needs of a growing world population without having a negative impact on the environment and climate. Synthetic chemicals are mostly used to protect agricultural crops from harmful organisms, but they are usually very toxic, endanger human and animal health, pollute the environment, and lead to the development of resistance in harmful organisms. Plant-based pesticides are an alternative to synthetic pesticides because they provide efficient control of pests while being safe for the people who use them. Possible disadvantages of plant-based pesticides are their short shelf life, photosensitivity and volatility, which complicates their use in protecting agricultural crops. Encapsulation technology allows sensitive substances such as various oil components (neem oil) to be physically coated with a protective material. The active ingredients of the oil components are thus protected from adverse weather conditions, segregation and undesirable interactions. Considering the importance of neem oil and its use in controlling numerous pests on various crops, encapsulation of this oil would provide a stable formula for pest control. This paper describes the pesticidal efficacy of microparticles of encapsulated neem oil and explores the potential of formulations and applications in crop protection.
