Abstract

This work is devoted to exploring a Pseudo-Athanasian Homily on Various Ways of Salvation and Repentance in a Mediaeval Slavonic reading miscellany with a fixed type of composition known as Izmaragd (in both of its ancient recensions, which were created in the 14th century) and in the so-called Khlud Miscellany which appeared before Izmaragd. We have identified a Greek text that served as a source for the homily. This text has been mentioned in manuscripts dated as early as the tenth century, but has slipped the attention of Byzantine scholars and was not included in PG and CPG. A comparison of the Slavonic and Greek versions is presented in a series of tables accompanied with textual comments. The research has identified which Greek text formed the basis of the Slavonic versions, showing both the extent to which they preserve the original and how they compare to each other. Some observations are made in regard to Izmaragd and Khlud Miscellany concerning the issues of their origin and development. A stemma is offered to illustrate the history of the text; the homily itself is made available in the appendix .
