Abstract

Testing health safety of water for human consumption is important for timely detection of potential pollution by microorganisms, parasites and other substances dangerous for human health. Water pollution means the presence of pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci, which can enter the water system in different manners, and present a risk for human health. The sampling was performed in three water supply areas in the Varaždin County, both in public and local water supply systems, during some months in 2019 and 2020. The results revealed that there were some deviations from max. permitted indicator values in certain local water supply systems, on average equalling58.8 cfu/100 mL more E. coli, 1845 cfu/100 mL more total coliforms, as well as water turbidity, which is not exceeding the limit values of 4 NTU. The stated increased average values for E.coliand total coliforms indicate inadequacy of local water supply systems. The water samples in all public water supply systems were health-safe and comply with existing regulations and ordinances.
