Abstract

Historiographical metafiction in contemporary novels portraying the Great War is an excellent starting point for the discussion on the philosophy of history and the medial as well as narratological conditions of memory and historiography. An analysis of historiographical metafiction by Christoph Poschenrieder, Thomas Lehr, and Hans von Trotha clarifies the anchoring
of memory of the Great War in a specific present, the role of the media and places of memory, its narrative structure as well as the changes in the German-speaking debate about the Great War which have occurred since the end of the Cold War.

Keywords
