Abstract

Community engagement of higher education institutions (HEIs), perceived as cooperation between HEIs and their local communities, implies more than transfer of technology and know-how; it encompasses an active exchange of resources needed to address social issues. One of the ways HEIs can increase their involvement in the community is through service learning, a teaching method which combines positive effects of work placements with solving burning issues in its community. This can be achieved by involving students in structured activities within the local community. This type of student engagement is equally rewarding for all involved; the students gain valuable experience, the institution’s involvement in the community gains strength, and the community itself receives the help it needs. Achievement and assessment of learning outcomes are an important part of service learningThis method is easily applied to LSP teaching, as indicated by research results and numerous examples of good teaching practice.
