Abstract

Student engagement and motivation in teaching has proven to be an important part of their education, leading to a positive impact on learning outcomes. This research sought an answer to whether there is a difference in the results of students in classical teaching using learning management systems and students participating in gamified teaching within the same system. Gamification was chosen as a means to improve student engagement and motivation, as gamification methods and elements can easily and well fit into any learning management system. In the case of this research, Moodle was used, because there are a number of add-ons that can be used for gamification. This study used the methodology of experimental research of student results in the course Web Application Programming through two academic years, 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. The obtained student results were subjected to statistical analyzes using t-tests to assess whether there is a significant difference between the mean values. The results showed that gamification has a positive effect on student satisfaction, but also on increasing motivation when performing tasks, which ultimately resulted in better grades than students than students in the previous year.
